Abelardo Morell: Playing presents a selection of old and recent works by the Havana-born photographer, and former resident of the Upper West Side, Abelardo Morell. The exhibition celebrates the artist’s magical explorations of the camera, which he has used to observe, and enliven, primary materials and scenes of everyday life. Many of Morell’s photographs, including those in Playing, were created within the confined space of the artists’ home: a dreamlike interior, where his personal and creative lives collide.

The Society of the Four Arts Sculpture Garden, Palm Beach, FL

Flora Imaginaria: The Flower in Contemporary Photography celebrates the beauty and biodiversity of flowers in 71 photographs by 49 internationally acclaimed artists. This spectacular bouquet of floral imagery will be on display in the Four Arts’ Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden, providing a unique experience with art in the context of nature. It explores the aesthetic and decorative qualities of flowers and their rich cultural history as symbols and motifs through many genres of photography, including still lifes, botanical studies, portraits, studies of the body, street photography, and surrealist collages.

The Addison Gallery of American Art, Andover, MA

Featuring many works from the High’s extensive collection along with important loans from private and public collections, A Long Arc will include photographs of the American Civil War, which transformed the practice of photography across the nation and established visual codes for articulating national identity and expressing collective trauma. Photographs from the 1930s–1950s, featuring many created for the Farm Security Administration, will demonstrate how that era defined a new kind of documentary aesthetic that dominated American photography for decades and included jarring and unsettling pictures that exposed economic and racial disparities. With works drawn from the High’s unparalleled collection of civil rights-era photography, the exhibition will show how photographs of the movement in the decade that followed galvanized the nation with raw depictions of violence and the struggle for justice. Contemporary photography featured in the exhibition will demonstrate how photographers working today continue to explore Southern history and themes to grasp American identity.
